Vice Commodore
By Alden Andre', C38, Fly Bye
Hello and I hope every one has had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year. The month of December has been very busy for me and I haven’t been able to do much boat stuff. I did get a quote on another bimini and enclosure for my C38 though (it was a gift from Santa). I am going to have the business owner come and talk for the January meeting on canvas and window repair and care.I am currently scheduling other vendors for the months ahead to give talks at our monthly meetings. I would like some input from our members on what subjects they would like presented. So feel free to call me or email me on this. I did go sailing two times in December. We had some good strong winds and I was the only boat on the water, it was kind of lonely though since it was just me myself and I. If any body else is interested in going out on cold windy days just give me a call. Hope to see you at the boat show.

Rear Commodore
By Bob Gales & Gail O'Neill, SoleilEditor's Notes: Bob and Gail are once again in the market for a Catalina 36 if the right one comes along. This time one year ago they were involved in purchasing Soleil (a Beneteau) to replace their beloved C30 Imagine. Upon hearing from our Commodore that River City Sailing had been awarded a Catalina Yachts dealership, Bob commented:
"...tell him [Roger Londberg, River City Sailing] to be on the lookout for a good (cheap) C36, early 90's. I don't want to have two boats so I'm going to need to sell the Beneteau first but it would be good to know what's out there!"
A new Catalina Yachts Dealership in Portland
Dear Catalina Owners,
River City Sailing (RCS) is proud to announce that we are the new Portland Catalina Yachts Dealer! RCS is re-defining the Brokerage Industry by taking the focus off of profits and putting it back on our customers. We want to show you how much we care, and we are here to service all your sailboat needs as well as be your bridge to the Catalina Yachts company. We currently have a large local network of mechanics, canvas makers, sail makers, electronic specialists and many more that are at your disposal. Stop by our office if you have any questions, or just to chat. Our office is located at Tomahawk Bay Moorage 515 NE Tomahawk Island Drive, Suite 103, Portland, OR 97217.
- Thinking about a new boat? We will be stocking the sleek new 2007 Catalina 34mkII as well as the beautiful and elegant 2007 42mkII 2 Cabin Pullman.
- Thinking about Selling? There is no one better equipped to sell your used Catalina then the Portland Catalina Dealer. We know Catalinas, and our enthusiasm for the brand will facilitate your sailboat’s ability to sell.
- Need parts? We would be happy to save you on your shipping expense by including your parts order with items we are already having shipped up here.
- Join us at The Portland Boat Show! If you are planning on selling your boat this upcoming year, you can’t afford to miss this opportunity to have your sailboat represented at the RCS booth located in Hall E of the Sailboat Section.
- We want to hear from you. We are working hard to come up with better ways to serve the Catalina Community. Some ideas we have are to bring in speakers to talk about issues pertinent to Catalina owners, such as maintenance and upkeep, sail trim, boating safety and more. We would also love to sponsor a yearly weekend sailing trip on the Columbia for current Catalina owners and their families.
Sincerely,
Roger Londberg

What is a Vessel Safety Check? It is a free check of a vessel’s equipment for compliance with federal and state safety requirements. The vessel examiners performing this service have been trained to look for some of the more common problems, which might occur in your boat or its associated safety equipment. Some of the items we check are:
- Proper display of numbers
- Registration/Documentation
- Personal Flotation Devices; Life Jackets
- Visual Distress Signals
- Fire extinguishers
- Ventilation
- Backfire flame control
- Sound producing devices
- Navigation lights
- State requirements
- Overall vessel condition
CRACA members need to get a VSC each year to meet the requirements of membership.
I, the CRACA Safety Focal and a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, will be available the Saturday before (March 24, 2007) the first cruise of the year to Hadley’s Landing March 31-April 1, 2007 to do a VSC. I will be walking the docks at Tomahawk Bay and Hayden Bay to perform VSC’s and I will also be available at the cruise if you come.
So lots of opportunities to get your VSC done before the boating season! If those days don’t work out, just give me a phone call or e-mail to work out a day/place that will work.
Oregon Boater Education Card
Here's an announcement from the Oregon State Marine Board.
Replacement Boater Education Card Fee Increase
Starting January 1, 2007, the cost for replacing a boater education card goes from $5 to $8, due to increasing costs for processing and mailing. The Oregon State Marine Board recently approved a fee increase for a replacement boater education card at the December 14th meeting in Salem.
"If boaters have lost their card, had their name changed, or if their card is damaged or stolen, boaters need to order a replacement card," says MariAnn Koloszar, Education Coordinator for the Marine Board.
The fee for not carrying a boater education card is $97. In 2007, boaters who are 60 and younger, operating a boat over 10 hp, need to take a boating safety course and apply for a boater education card. More than 150,000 Oregonians have their boater education card.
For more information about boating safety courses, visit www.boatoregon.com.

By Dale Mack, C30, Celtic MystPortland Boat Show
I want to thank everyone who signed up for Portland Boat Show booth duty. As in past years everything you need and need to know while on duty is stored in the blue plastic bin under the table. It can sometimes feel a little chilly so dress in layers.
Besides setting the booth up on Friday, I'll be there for a few minutes when the show opens on Saturday, at 11 am just to check on everything and get the first crew started. I'll also be standing SYSCO booth duty on Saturday from 2 pm to 5 pm if anyone wants to drop by and say hello.
Looking Forward to the Seattle Boat Shows
Laura and I plan to attend the Seattle Boat Show and the Lake Union Boats Afloat Show on Saturday, February, 3rd. I've come to enjoy this annual pilgrimage to Seattle. While Laura frequently skips the more powerboat and marine gear oriented Seattle Boat Show, we both enjoy touring the sailboats and trawlers at the Lake Union Boats Afloat Show. Topped off with a wonderful dinner at one of the many local restaurants, Laura and I always enjoy this weekend away from home.
See you at the boat shows.

AGNW is owned by Mike Jameson and Dan Miller who took over the business just before Thanksgiving. They will continue to do business as Admiralty Yacht Sales.
AYS will be at the Seattle Boat Show displaying a Catalina 42, a Catalina-Morgan 440, a Catalina 28 MKII, and the new Catalina 309 that was just awarded Boat of the Year status by Cruising World magazine.
Performance Yachts of Bellingham plan to be at the show with a Catalina 309, Catalina 34mkII, a Catalina 400, and possibly a Catalina-Morgan 440
Cruising
Cruising Chairman
By Jim Elieff, C30, Fortune
Hello CRACA members,Happy New Year! You may remember from my December report that the CRACA Board would be discussing our cruising schedule for September, since at the time a date and location hadn't been identified. For those not planning to participate in the Sail for the Cure, CRACA will offer a cruise to Hadley's Landing on Multnomah Channel.
The 2007 Catalina Rendezvous is scheduled for September 15-16. At this time the candidates for destinations include McCuddy's Landing - Scappoose (Multnomah Channel) and the St. Helens city docks. Various members of the Board are leaning toward St. Helens because of the opportunity to include some sailing into the event.
Cruise Hosts Needed
I'm looking for volunteers to host cruises for the 2007 season. As a cruise host your duties typically include:
- Defining what "organized fun" will be part of the cruise. Examples include sharing appetizers, desserts, potluck meals, games, a cruise theme (i.e. Halloween), camp fires, etc. You make of the role what you want it to be. From relaxed with just sharing afternoon appetizers, to more elaborate planning involved with past Halloween Cruises, it's up to you to decide. We don't have a preset formula that has to be repeated year after year, so it's up to you.
- Work with our Communications Officer, Dale Mack, to promote the cruise at least thirty days prior to the event.
- Check on the status of any destinations and facilities planned for the cruise.
- Collect the names of those planning to participate on the cruise.
- In the event of adverse weather, notify participants of any changes.
- Show up on the cruise. If you can't make it, find a replacement and notify the participants and the Cruise Officer.
