From the Commodore

By Bob Gales

Ahoy Mates,

December is here already, a busy, busy time of the year! I hope you have marked your calendars for the CRACA holiday potluck on Saturday, December 10. (See the info box in this newsletter) Be sure to bring your dancing shoes and singing/humming voices. Its that time of year to re-acquaint yourself with holiday tunes.

Dave and Julie Thomas will be collecting food and other items for those in need this winter. Bring your donations to the party where they will be collected at the top of the ramp. No sense lugging stuff down and then back up!

Life is good up here on the mountain. Without a boat in the water to worry about (soon to change) Gail and I have had the opportunity for some R&R.

Thanksgiving found us at one of our son-in-law's parents for a festive feast with new friends. We have had a chance to visit with children, friends and just hang out at home. This morning (Dec. 1) we watched 3" of snow fall creating a winter wonderland. Skiing is great, we have two days in already. A huge difference from last year.

But now we do have something to worry about: Getting our new boat back to Portland. Gail and I bit the bullet and had our offer accepted on our next boat. A bit bigger and hopefully more comfortable for longer cruises than our wonderful C30 Imagine. This weekend Gail and I will go to Port Townsend to finalize the deal and make sure "Whatever her name will be" is ready for the two day trip down the sound to Olympia. Once in Olympia we will de-mast, load her on a truck and haul her to Portland. With the high moorage rates in Olympia and the cost to drive back and forth from Welches (lots of work to do on the boat) it will actually save quite a few hundred dollars to truck her home. We really are looking forward to rehabbing another boat. It is a great way to get to know the insides/outsides and put your own stamp on it. For do-it-yourselfers it is also a good way to save a few boat units.

Now I am looking forward to the boat shows, searching for that great deal on all kinds of goodies. Gail and I are both signed up for the CRACA booth as well as the OWSA booth, hopefully side-by-side this year. Have you signed up yet?

See you at Rose City, or on the water.

Cruising Plans for 2006

By Jim Elieff, C30, Fortune

CRYA has finalized the 2006 Cruising Schedule.  The only change to our proposed schedule was that our first cruise in mid-March had to move to April 1st.

We will be sharing Hadley's Landing with the St. Helens Sail & Power Club.  Once again our April cruise to Bartlett Landing (Government Island, East Dock) will have us sharing the facility with the Hunter Sailing Association of Oregon (HSAO).

CYRA has pledged $2,000 to the new Government Island West Dock project along with $5,000 to build a picnic shelter.  Cliffs Marina at the end of Marine Drive has been shut down.  Christmas Ship Parade will be starting December 8th.

I look forward to seeing everybody at the December 10th party.

Technical Tips

Do It Yourself Dodger and Cockpit Enclosure

By Gary Jaeckel, C30, Mistress II
Editor's Note:  This is the first of two stories Gary wrote regarding projects completed on Mistress II.  The second story will appear in the January newsletter.
The dodger and cockpit enclosure of Mistress II were on their last legs so for a couple of years I nursed them along with a variety of repairs. One day my son put his hand through the dodger and it was apparent their time was up.

At the boat show I requested several bids to replace the entire enclosure which ranged around $5,000.00.  This definitely did not fit our budget so I had to come up with another option. Over the years I have done several sewing projects ranging from sail and winch covers but to attempt a dodger and enclosure myself was daunting; however, if Mistress II was going to have a dodger soon it was the only way.

I purchased Sunbrella and the window material locally and all of the fasteners and basting tape from Sailrite.  I already own a Sailrite zigzag machine so the only thing holding me back was my own fear.

I used the old sections as patterns and added a few changes of my own including a roll up center section to the enclosure top. I worked on the project every weekend for several months.  It was as difficult of a project as I feared and I now know why they are so expensive to purchase.

Our material costs excluding sewing machine ran about $1,300.00. I made a few mistakes and learned some tricks as I went along but the project came out pretty nice.

If I were to do it again I would not rely on the old panels as much as I did for patterns because it amplifies any original mistakes.

If anyone plans to tackle a project like this I can only suggest taking your time and having a lot of patience.
